Quick answer
Most PGs in Hyderabad ask for a government photo ID (Aadhaar is the most common), a recent passport-size photo, your current employer or college ID or offer letter, an emergency contact, and a signed PG agreement covering rent, deposit, and notice period. Carry originals plus a photocopy on move-in day.
Move-in day goes faster when you're not scrambling for a document the owner needs but you didn't bring. Here's what's standard across most PGs in Hyderabad.
Identity and address proof
- Government photo ID: Aadhaar card is the most commonly requested, since it doubles as address proof. A passport, voter ID, or driving licence is usually accepted as an alternative.
- A recent passport-size photo: some owners still keep a physical file alongside digital records.
- Permanent address details: even if your ID shows a different city, owners typically note your home address and an emergency contact from that address.
Proof of why you're in Hyderabad
- Offer letter or employee ID for working professionals. Some owners ask for this mainly to confirm you have a stable income for rent.
- College ID or admission letter for students, particularly common for PGs near Ameerpet, Kukatpally, and other education-heavy localities.
Emergency contact
Almost every PG will ask for a name, relationship, and phone number for someone to contact in an emergency, usually a parent or close relative. Have this ready rather than filling it in on the spot from memory.
The PG agreement itself
A basic PG agreement, sometimes a printed form, sometimes just a WhatsApp confirmation for smaller PGs, should cover, at minimum:
- Monthly rent and what's included (food, electricity, WiFi)
- Security deposit amount and terms for getting it back
- Notice period required before vacating
- Move-in date and room/bed assignment
Ask for this in writing even if it's informal. A screenshot of an agreed WhatsApp message is far better than a verbal understanding if a dispute ever comes up about the deposit later.
What to physically carry on move-in day
- Original ID + one photocopy
- Passport photo
- Offer letter / college ID (original or clear photo)
- Advance rent and deposit, in the payment method the owner accepts
- Any medical information the PG should know for an emergency
