Quick answer
When relocating for work anywhere in India, start a PG search 2 to 3 weeks before your move date, narrow your search to your actual commute area rather than the whole city, confirm gender policy and what's included in rent, and keep your documents (ID, offer letter, passport photo) ready so move-in isn't held up by paperwork.
Relocating for a new job is stressful enough without also guessing at where to live. This checklist applies whether you're headed to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, or anywhere else in India for work.
1. Get your actual work location before you search
Don't search a whole city. Get the specific office location, or at least the general zone, from your new employer before you start looking. A PG that's excellent for one part of a city can be a genuinely bad commute from another part of the same city.
2. Set a realistic budget that includes food
Factor in whether food is included in the PG rent or billed separately, and price your budget against your actual take-home pay in your new city, not your old one. Cost of living varies significantly across Indian cities, and a rent that felt reasonable in one city can be a stretch in another.
3. Decide your must-haves before you start comparing
Common must-haves for people relocating for work: gender policy, AC vs Non-AC, WiFi reliability, and food quality. Deciding these upfront keeps you from getting distracted by a PG that looks appealing but misses your actual requirements.
4. Start the paperwork early
Most PGs ask for a government photo ID, a recent passport photo, and proof of why you're in the city (an offer letter works for this). Have digital copies ready so a late-arriving document doesn't delay your move-in date.
5. Confirm the details that don't show up in a listing photo
Current vacancy, exact room number, what's included versus billed separately, deposit amount, and notice period should all be confirmed directly with the owner, ideally in writing over WhatsApp, before you commit.
6. Treat your first PG as a starting point, not a life sentence
Most PGs have a short notice period, commonly around a month. If your first choice turns out to be a poor fit once you're actually living and commuting from it, moving is a realistic option, not a major undertaking.
